This was evident as Shreyas Iyer did not participate in Mumbai’s last group match or the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy, citing a back problem despite no new injuries reported by the head of sports science and medicine at the National Cricket Academy.
In a statement, the BCCI noted that both cricketers were not included in the annual contracts. Responding to this, Saha remarked that it was the decision of the BCCI and the personal choice of the players involved.

Saha’s remarks followed the exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the BCCI’s annual central contract list for the 2023-24 season.
Addressing the issue of some players shying away from opportunities, Saha stated, “It’s unfortunate that some players decline to play when given the chance, which they shouldn’t. Whenever an opportunity arises, regardless of the format, players should seize it.”
Saha emphasized the importance of domestic cricket. He stated, “Whenever I am fit, I play all types of matches, including club and office matches. I always treat home matches with the same importance as any other big match. To me, all competitions are equal. If every player adopts this mindset, it will not only benefit their careers but also Indian cricket as a whole.”
In response to the BCCI’s statement regarding the exclusion of both cricketers from annual contracts, Saha stated, “This is the decision of the BCCI and the personal choice of the players concerned. You cannot force anything or force someone to play.” He noted that both players were part of the Indian team until recently and highlighted their recent involvement in international matches, including the ODI World Cup. Kishan featured in the Test team during India’s tour of South Africa in December, while Iyer played the first two Tests of the ongoing series against England.
