Super Overs Drama

There was a lot of drama that happened during the Super Over match and when players from both teams were seen fighting with each other. Indian captain Rohit Sharma lost his temperament during the first super-over match and argued with Afghanistan player Mohammad Nabi over sportsmanship.

Why did the Super Over Drama happen between Rohit and Nabi?

‘’Afghanistan’s batters Mohammad Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz started batting in the first super over of the match. Indian fast bowler Mukesh Kumar was bowling the first super over of the match. The last ball of his over did not hit Nabi’s bat and went into the hands of wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, both the batsmen ran to score runs when Samson threw the ball and the ball hit Nabi’s feet and went in the direction of long on to Virat Kohli.

After seeing this opportunity of extra runs, both the Nabi and Gurbaz started running and got two extra runs. Seeing this, Captain Rohit Sharma became very angry. He went near to Nabi and objected to the fact that the ball had hit his (Nabi) leg and even then he was stealing runs.’’

Nabi then said that neither had he come in the line of the ball nor had he done so intentionally. In such a situation, it is his right to take runs. At that time an argument started between Rohit and Mohammed Nabi. After this Rohit left the field in anger. The umpire declared it a bye. Afghanistan got three runs bye on this ball.’’

Virat Kohli expressed dissatisfaction with Mohammed Nabi being charged for two additional runs when the ball struck him.

MCC Rules About Super Over

Marylebone Cricket Rules (MCC Rules) also say that as long as the batsman taking the run has come in the line of the ball and has not done so intentionally, he can take bye runs and it is his right to do so.

A batsman who has been dismissed in the first Super Over is not allowed to bat in the second. If a batsman is listed for the first Super Over but did not bat or was not dismissed or retired hurt, they remain eligible to bat in the second Super Over.

Same thing happened during the 2019 ICC World Cup Final, When the ball crossed the boundary after hitting Ben Stokes’ bat and he was given four runs, England won the World Cup Trophy.

Double Super Over Rules

A bowler who has bowled in the first Super Over is not eligible to bowl in the second Super Over. Therefore, neither Azmatullah Omarzai nor Mukesh Kumar were given the ball in the second Super Over. In the next Super Over, the team that batted first in the designated 20 overs must bat second. The same rule applies to the second Super Over as it does to any Super Over. If a team batted second in the regular 20 overs and the match ended in a tie, they will have to bat first in the Super Over.

After 3rd T20I Rahul Dravid said about the situation at the press conference, “It can happen at the end. I think sometimes when you play for your country, there’s so much passion and emotion. I think it is incredible that even in dead-rubber games when it gets down to the wire, that competitiveness comes out, that passion comes out.”

“It’s fine. It’s part of the game. Some frustrations at times can happen but it is okay. It hit the non-striker and then it moved and I think it is fine, you know, you can run for those. To be honest, in the first T20I there was an incident where it hit the bat of our batsman and we ran a run as well. I think there’s nothing to read into, there’s nothing in the rules that stops you from actually running those runs. That’s fine, it’s part of the game.”
