West Indies becomes 6th team to commit to gender pay equity

West Indies becomes 6th team to commit to gender pay equity: West Indies has joined with New Zealand, India, Australia, South Africa, and England in progressing towards gender pay equity in cricket committing towards achieving equal pay between genders.

The ICC declared prize money parity for men’s and women’s teams in ICC tournaments just last year. Following this initiative, the West Indies has aligned itself with several other cricket boards.

The West Indies demonstrated their commitment to promoting gender pay equity for all their cricketers. This commitment was formalized through the signing of a new four-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) on Thursday.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) said in a statement, ‘’West Indies cricket to attain parity in various aspects, including international and regional match fees, international captain’s allowances, international team prize money, and regional individual prize money. The goal is to achieve this parity for all West Indies cricketers by October 1, 2027.’’

The President of Cricket West Indies, Dr. Kishore Shallow, emphasized the significance of the recent announcement, describing it as a pivotal moment for the region and a major step towards achieving pay equity in the future, he stated, “This marks a historic day for West Indies cricket.”

“As we revamp compensation structures and harmonize performance grading, we are taking a substantial step towards establishing a more inclusive and progressive cricket framework. This move underscores our steadfast commitment to gender equality, recognizing the substantial contributions of female players to West Indies cricket.”

“In the past year, we implemented significant improvements to our travel policy, ensuring that the West Indies Senior Women’s team travels business-class on all extended international flights and stays in single rooms during international assignments. This aligns seamlessly with the established policy for West Indies Senior Men’s tours. Today, with the signing of this MOU, we take another significant stride in narrowing the gender gap within our cricketing community.”
