Uganda qualifies 1st time in Men’s T20 Worldcup

Uganda became the fifth African nation to participate in the T20 World Cup.

Namibia clinches the first of two slots for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 which is to be held in the West Indies and the USA. Now Uganda fixes the second slot, beating Rwanda by nine wickets on Thursday in Wanderers Cricket Ground, Windhoek.

Uganda achieved a historic milestone in its cricketing history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the first time. They secured this qualification by defeating Rwanda in their final game of the Africa region qualifier.

Uganda not only earned its spot in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but also prevented Zimbabwe from securing a place in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Uganda vs Rwanda match Highlights

By winning the toss, Uganda opted to field first. Batting first, Rwanda all out at 65 runs playing 18.5 overs. Rwanda batter Eric Dusingizimana hit 19 runs from his side, which is the highest individual score. In replay Uganda comfortably achieved the target in 8.1 overs, losing only one wicket. Uganda batter Simon Ssesazi scores an unbeaten 26 runs and Ronak Patel 18 runs.

Uganda became the fifth African nation to participate in the T20 World Cup. Namibia became the first team to fix one of the two available spots for qualification to the tournament proper.

Zimbabwe currently holds the third position in the regional final with six points, having emerged victorious in three out of five games. Following the outcomes of the Africa Qualifier, the slots for all 20 participating teams have been filled. The main tournament is scheduled to occur from June 4 to June 30 next year.

Africa, Asia, and Europe each had two qualification spots, with one spot allocated for both the Americas and East-Asia Pacific regions. Teams that finish as the top two in each group will advance to the Super 8 stage, leading to the semi-finals and ultimately the final.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh secured the following two spots based on the next-best T20I rankings.

The T20 World Cup lineup is now confirmed, with West Indies and the USA qualifying automatically as hosts. Additionally, the top 8 teams from the T20 World Cup 2022 secured their places. Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualified based on T20I rankings, while the remaining eight teams earned their spots through various qualifiers: Europe Qualifier (2 teams), East Asia-Pacific Qualifier (1 team), Americas Qualifier (1 team), Asia Qualifier (2 teams), and Africa Qualifier (2 teams).
