WPL 2024, DC vs RCB: Smriti & Richa get emotional as Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered a last-ball thriller defeat against Delhi Capitals in the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. RCB lost the match to Delhi Capitals by just one run. Richa Ghosh delivered a brilliant innings, scoring 51 runs off just 29 balls for RCB.

Delhi Capitals clinched victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Delhi, securing their spot in the playoffs of the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Despite a valiant effort from Royal Challengers Bangalore’s wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, her team suffered a narrow one-run defeat to Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, March 10.

Opting to bat first, Delhi Capitals got off to a solid start with captain Meg Lanning and Shefali Verma forming a solid 54-run partnership. But Shefali Verma was dismissed for 23 by Sobhana. Then Meg Lanning followed soon after, departing for 29 with the score at 60/2 by Shreyanka Patil.

Following Meg Lanning’s dismissal, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey steadied the innings for Delhi Capitals. This duo played brilliantly in the middle order continued to attack on Royal Challengers Bangalore’s bowling, putting together an impressive 97-run partnership for the third wicket until Jemimah Rodrigues was dismissed at 157/3 by Shreyanka Patil. Rodrigues played with a superb innings of 58 off 36 balls at a striking rate of 161.11. She showcased her expertise against slow bowlers by scoring a half-century in just 26 balls.

Alice Capsey’s innings came to an end after scoring 48 off 32 balls at 176/4. Jonassen’s stay at the crease was short-lived as she was dismissed for 1 at 179/5. Delhi Capitals posted a total of 180/5 in their 20 overs, with Marizanne Kapp and Radha Yadav batting on 12 and 1, respectively.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey were the standout performers for Delhi Capitals with the bat, while Shreyanka Patil’s four-wicket haul proved decisive in securing the win.

Shreyanka Patil led the bowling attack for Royal Challengers Bangalore, claiming a four-wicket haul, while Asha Shobana picked up one wicket only.

DC vs RCB: Richa Ghosh in tears

Despite chasing a target of 182, Royal Challengers Bangalore managed only 180/7 in their allotted 20 overs fell short by just one run in a nail-biting finish.

RCB suffered an early setback when captain Smriti Mandhana was dismissed earlyer in pursuit of their 182-run chase in New Delhi on Sunday. However, they managed to recover thanks to a solid 80-run partnership between Sophie Molineux and Ellyse Perry. Delhi Capitals fought back into the game by removing both batters within the span of just five balls. Nevertheless, RCB found another partnership between Sophie Devine and Richa Ghosh, adding 49 runs.

Richa Ghosh’s innings of 51 off 29 balls ended on a losing note in the thrilling final over. Ellyse Perry and Sophie Devine contributed significantly with an impressive 80-run partnership, with scores of 49 and 29 respectively. However, Georgia Wareham (12) and Disha Kasat (0) failed to deliver when their team needed them the most, leaving the pressure on Richa Ghosh.

With 17 runs needed off the last six balls to secure victory, Richa Ghosh played a crucial role scored 15 runs but fell short by just two runs of achieving the target after being run out while completing a single at the non-striker’s end.

For Delhi Capitals, Marizanne Kapp, Alice Capsey, Shikha Pandey, and Arundhati Reddy took two wickets each. Jenn Jonassen executed a crucial run-out of Richa Ghosh on the final ball of the match.
