Srilanka Innings

Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera opened the match at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. In the 1st over Shoriful Islam dismissed Kusal Perera. Pathum Nissanka set the tone with an aggressive start, contributing a crucial 41 runs, set the foundation, and was dismissed by Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Kusal Mendis started well but couldn’t convert it into a big innings, as he was dismissed by Shakib. At the end of 10 overs Srilanka 52/1.

In the middle order Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka once again began the rebuilding process for Sri Lanka. Charith Asalanka delivered a superb performance, securing his second ODI century and rescuing his team from a precarious position. He displayed a positive attitude right from the beginning of his innings, even in the face of losing wickets.

However, there seemed to be more movement for the fast bowlers today. Despite being at 135/5, with the surprising timed-out dismissal of Mathews, Sri Lanka managed a commendable recovery.

On the other hand, Bangladesh can also take some satisfaction from their performance. Taskin was effective with the new ball, even though he didn’t manage to pick up any wickets, which instead went to Shoriful. Shakib and Mehidy maintained control during the middle overs, though Tanzim proved to be quite expensive, and got 3 wickets. Shoriful Islam and Shakib got 2 wickets each.

Sri Lanka’s final score of 279 may not appear particularly impressive when compared to the earlier matches at this venue.

The major point of discussion revolved around the dismissal of Mathews, who was declared timed out. This marked the first instance in men’s international cricket when a batsman was timed out. According to the rules, an incoming batsman is expected to be ready within 2 minutes after a dismissal. Mathews did step out within the allotted time, but his helmet strap came off just before he was set to face a delivery, causing a slight delay. Bangladesh lodged an appeal, and the umpires sided with them. Interestingly, this incident seemed to ignite a newfound determination in the Sri Lankan team, as they subsequently put together a strong passage of play to regain their momentum in the match.

Bangladesh Innings

Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das begin this 280run chase for Bangladesh. Dilshan Madushanka starts off with an expensive 10-run first over but in just the first ball of his second over, Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for 9 runs, dealing a significant blow to Bangladesh’s pursuit of the 280-run target. Again, Dilshan Madushanka grabbed his second wicket of Litton Das who scored 23 runs.

169 runs to be precise, came from a third-wicket partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto. These two left-handed batsmen had struggled in the World Cup prior to this match, but they showed up today to secure a relatively comfortable victory, despite the late wickets that fell towards the end. Najmul Hossain Shanto took control of the game and steered it in Bangladesh’s favor, scoring 90 runs and Shakib Al Hasan’s 82 runs.

Dilshan Madushanka did provide some hope with his two early wickets, and initially, Shakib appeared to be in uncertain form. However, once Shakib found his rhythm and the dew factor came into play, he and Shanto took control of the game and steered it in Bangladesh’s favor.
