Virat Kohli has etched his name in history with his 50th ODI century, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. It was Kohli’s third hundred at the ongoing tournament. Achieving this remarkable milestone in the presence of great Sachin Tendulkar, his cricketing idol adds an extra layer of significance. It’s worth noting that he accomplished this feat at the same venue where he carried Tendulkar on his shoulders in celebration of the 2011 World Cup triumph. The 2023 ODI World Cup marks the 13th edition of the tournament and the fourth time India has hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup. In the history of the World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar leads the all-time scoring charts with 2278 runs from 45 matches across six editions. The top five run-scorers also include Ricky Ponting (1743), Kumar Sangakkara (1532), Brian Lara (1225), and AB de Villiers (1207).
Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup (673), set in the 2003 tournament, has been surpassed by Kohli in the ongoing edition.
In the 2019 edition of the tournament, Rohit Sharma of India emerged as the leading run-scorer with 648 runs in nine matches. His remarkable run included a record-setting achievement of scoring five centuries, surpassing any other batter in a single World Cup. With this feat, the Indian captain has now accumulated a total of seven centuries in his overall World Cup tally, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
