Women's T20 World Cup 2024 shifted to the UAE from Bangladesh

The 9th edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 shifted to the UAE: the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated. Initially scheduled to take place in Bangladesh, although the exact reasons have not been elaborated by the ICC, it is understood that concerns related to infrastructure readiness and other logistical challenges are believed to be a key factor.

As a result, the ICC made the strategic decision that, the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 shifted to the UAE from Bangladesh, ensuring that the event would be conducted at the highest standards expected of a global tournament.

This ninth edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup will now start from October 3 to October 20, 2024, across the iconic venues of Dubai Stadium and Sharjah Stadium.

United Arab Emirates as the New Host for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

The choice of the UAE as the new venue is no surprise to cricket fans and experts. The UAE has steadily established itself as a crucial hub for international cricket, particularly as a neutral venue for various tournaments and bilateral series.

With its world-class facilities in Dubai and Sharjah, the UAE offers an environment well-suited for this event. The country’s experience in hosting major cricket events, including parts of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and T20 World Cup matches, makes it an ideal replacement.

The matches will be played across two premier venues in the UAE: Dubai International Stadium and Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The pitches in the United Arab Emirates

The pitches in the UAE are known to favor spin bowlers, and the hot, dry climate will test the endurance of the players.

The sudden shift in venue from Bangladesh to the UAE will require teams to adapt quickly to the different playing conditions.

Teams will need to reschedule their strategies and preparations, with some likely to gain an advantage due to their familiarity with the conditions in the UAE.

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice said, “It is a shame not to be hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh as we know the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would have staged a memorable event.”

“I would like to thank the team at the BCB for exploring all avenues to try and enable the event to be hosted in Bangladesh, but travel advisories from the governments of a number of the participating teams meant that wasn’t feasible. However, they will retain hosting rights. We look forward to taking an ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future.’’

Geoff Allardice added, “I’d also like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for stepping in to host on behalf of the BCB and Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe for their generous offers of support, and we look forward to seeing ICC global events in both of those countries in 2026.”
